Professor Frank Edwin has assumed office as the Pro-Vice Chancellor of the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) effective today, August 1, 2024. He took over from Professor Harry Tagbor who served from August 1, 2021 - July 31, 2024.
Speaking at a short ceremony to welcome the Pro-Vice Chancellor into office, Professor Lydia Aziato, Vice Chancellor of UHAS noted that the Office of the Pro-Vice Chancellor forms the core academic setup of the University and is responsible for the management of the University’s academic functions therefore “the Pro-Vice Chancellor needs our support in discharging his duties in order to improve the University.”
Ms. Yaa Amankwaa Opuni, the Registrar of UHAS in her congratulatory message said “we trust in your abilities to work effectively and efficiently to consolidate what we have as a university and improve on it.”
The new Pro-Vice Chancellor, Professor Frank Edwin in his remarks stated that it was an honour and privilege to serve UHAS. He added that “I am grateful to Senior Management and my predecessor, Professor Harry Tagbor.”
He further noted that the University’s newly commissioned infrastructure which comprises the Administration Block, the School of Nursing and Midwifery, and the biggest Simulation Laboratory in West Africa, is a call on each employee of UHAS to ensure that UHAS becomes “the number one university globally on the SDGs Impact Rankings in Healthcare Professional Education, Research and Community Service."
As a cardiothoracic surgeon and academic leader dedicated to advancing medical education and healthcare, Professor Edwin served as Dean of the UHAS School of Medicine from August 2021 to July 2024.
He earlier served as the founding Head of the Cardiothoracic Centre of Ho Teaching Hospital. Professor Edwin was instrumental in securing postgraduate training accreditation from the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons for the Teaching Hospital, enabling the training of the first batch of three general surgeons at the Teaching Hospital in 2023.
The new Pro-Vice Chancellor has been a Consultant Surgeon at the National Cardiothoracic Centre, Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital since October 2004. His academic journey includes a professorship in Surgery at UHAS, which he obtained in January 2017.
Internationally, Professor Edwin is the 2nd Vice President of the World Society for Pediatric and Congenital Heart Surgery since June 2024, having served as Secretary from July 2018 to May 2024. He is also the founding President of the African Society for Pediatric and Congenital Heart Surgery since 2020.
In attendance were former Pro-Vice Chancellor, Professor T.C. Fleischer, Deans, Directors and staff of the University community. Also present was his wife, Dr. Ama Edwin and representatives of various unions on campus who gave their respective solidarity messages.
