Trade Minister and Flagbearer hopeful Alan Kyeremante, has refuted reports that his supporters and those of Vice President Dr. Mahamdu Bawumia clashed at a funeral in Suhum on Saturday, August 28.
A viral video that showed mourners at a funeral engaging in a free for all fight was alleged to be a fight between factions of aspiring candidates for the NPP flag-leadership race.
Mr. Alan Kyeremante in a press release stated that reports that the rioters were from his camp and those of Dr. Bawumia are blatant lies and should be disregarded.
“Rumors currently circulating on social media that the clash was between my supporters and those of our Vice President are not only completely false but mischievous and have been contrived to bring both the Vice President and my good self into public ridicule. I condemn without reservation this barbaric act of some members of our great party,” the statement said.
The statement further added: “I believe strongly that any disagreement whether relating to a contest for position or differences in ideas and opinions should not be manifested in such violence in a party such as ours. The ideals of our party and tradition call for peaceful and harmonious coexistence and our motto, (Development in Freedom), has no place for violence.
“I, therefore, urge the Suhum Constituency Executives, the Eastern Regional Executives as well as the National Executives of the party to take immediate steps to resolve the differences between the two feuding sides to restore peace and discipline in the party.”
The free for all fight has however left two persons injured.
A Communications Officer of the NPP Lower West Akyem constituency, Bernard Kwesi Amoani, was allegedly slashed with a cutlass on his forehead by the driver of the Suhum MP.
Another victim, Alexander Odei, also sustained injuries on his lips at the chaos which ensued.
According to reports, the riot happened at the funeral observations of the late father of one of the party’s communicators identified as Opare.
The violent attacks ensued between supporters of the Member of Parliament, Kwadwo Asante, and a Presidential staffer, Frank Asiedu Bekoe, popularly known as Protozoa who is tipped to contest the sitting MP in the next constituency primaries.
A camp follower of Frank Asiedu, the Presidential Staffer popularly known as Big Deal, allegedly took a microphone at the funeral grounds to announce and place on record that they have been prevented from greeting the MP.
The supporters of the MP, inflamed by his comments allegedly unleashed attacks on him, leading to the slugfest.
The driver of the MP, identified as Jamalo, allegedly inflicted a deep machete wound on the head of the communications officer.
