Kpenoe (pronounced "Penway") is a traditional Ghanaian city about 4 hours' drive north of Accra in the Volta region of Ghana. The population of the traditional section is around 1,000 people. The local government consists of a supreme chief (chief), a queen mother, elders or deputy chiefs, and linguists.
The chief has much authority in most of the affairs of the village. He can be advised by the Elders and the Queen Mother, but the ultimate decision-making power rests with him. In Kpenoe, the elders are the heads of the various clans in the village.
The linguist sits across from the boss in formal meetings and all spoken communication goes through him. In this type of meeting, the boss speaks to the linguist and the linguist to the audience. When someone wants to talk to the boss, they go to the linguist and the linguist speaks to the boss.
Kpenoe is mostly a farming village for personal use. The crops are grown for the consumption of the peasant family, and part of the harvest is sold at the open-air market in Ho. Income is extremely limited, and often there is nothing left for expenses like school fees, uniforms, and school supplies, much less gift items and toys.
Without the Amenyo Foundation scholarships, students would rarely attend middle or high school.
