Live updates] Mahama claims victory

Former President John Dramani Mahama has expressed belief that he has won the just-ended general elections.

Former President John Dramani Mahama has expressed belief that he has won the just-ended general elections.

Not only did he win 10 out of the 16 regions, he told journalists at his residence on Tuesday, December 8, but also his party has won 140 out of the 275 constituencies.

The Presidential Candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) warned that any attempt by the Akufo-Addo-led government to subvert the will of the people will be resisted.

EC ready to declare results

Officials of the Electoral Commission, Ghana (EC) are getting ready at the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC) to declare results of Monday’s presidential elections.

Foreign as well as local observers are at AICC for the exercise.

Timeline extended

The Electoral Commission, Ghana (EC) had earlier announced for the information of all Ghanaians that its 24-hour time frame set for the declaration of Monday’s election results will not be met

It said the timeline has been extended in order to ensure that collation of results from constituency and regional collation centres are accurate.

NDC projects parliamentary majority, win for Mahama

The General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, says his party is getting ready to select the next Speaker of Parliament and the First Deputy Speaker as the NDC has won a “clear majority” in Parliament.

Speaking to journalists at the party’s headquarters on Tuesday, for the first time after the elections, Mr Asiedu Nketia says NDC’s candidate, John Dramani Mahama, is heading towards victory in the polls.

“By tomorrow morning, he will be declared winners of the elections,” he said.

NPP claims Akufo-Addo wins with 51.46%

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) says their collation so far makes their candidate, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, winner of the 2020 elections.

According to the party’s General Secretary, John Boadu, Nana Akufo-Addo has polled a total of 6,610,417 votes, representing 51.46 percent to beat John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The party, however, insists that it will await the EC for the final confirmation.

EC sure to declare results within 24 hours

The Electoral Commission, Ghana (EC) says it is still collating results of Monday’s elections and could declare within 24 hours.

The declaration of results will be done by the Returning Officer of the presidential elections, Jean Adukwei Mensa, who is also the Chair of the Commission, at the Accra International Conference Center (AICC).

If done, this will be a fulfillment of a pledge by the Commission to declare the results within that time frame.

NPP leads NDC with 56.6%

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is leading the National Democratic Congress (NDC) after 12 percent of constituency votes collated by Media General so far.

Thirty-two constituencies collated put the ruling party ahead of the opposition.

Out of these, nine are in the NPP stronghold of Ashanti Region and two are in the NDC stronghold of the Volta Region.

The NPP, as a result, is leading with 56.6 percent while the NDC has 42.1 percent. It is too early to call, nonetheless.

The results are certified based on proof by the EC’s returning officers at the 32 constituencies.

Mahama leading, NDC claims

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) says its presidential candidate, John Dramani Mahama, is leading the collated results so far and have parliamentary majority.

According to the party’s Director of Elections, Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, the party has so far won 140 seats contrary to claims by the incumbent New Patriotic Party (NPP) that they are winning.

He said this during an emergency press conference on Tuesday, December 8.

Maa Lydia wins but NDC to challenge results

Incumbent Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency Lydia Seyram Alhassan has won the seat after she polled a majority of the votes collated at the University of Ghana Business School.

Provisional results obtained by Media General‘s Portia Gabor put the New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate ahead with a total of 39,851 votes while National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate John Dumelo had 37,778 votes.

But NDC’s Constituency Chairman Bismark Bobie Aryeetey said they have reservations about the processes leading to the declaration of the results.

As a result, he told our reporter that the party will challenge the results in due course.

EC office torched in Fomena; expelled MP wins

The chaos being reported at collation centers across the country appears to be spreading.

In the Fomena Constituency, tension is said to be building up after the district office of the Electoral Commission was up in flames.

Reports say the office was seen burning after lights at the collation centre went out.

But the parliamentary results have been declared. Expelled MP Andrews Amoako Asiamah, who contested as an independent candidate, has won.

He won by over 12,000 votes with his closest contender, NPP’s Philip Ofori Asante, polling 10,798 votes.

EC officials run for their lives amid gunshots at Ablekuma Central

At the collation center for the Ablekuma Central Constituency at the Odorkor Divisional Police Headquarters, gunshots were fired by the police and military, Wendy Laryea reported.

Two people sustained various degrees of injury, she said.

At the Modak Hotel in the Odododiodio Constituency, there were sporadic shooting.

Odododiodio MP arrested

Our reporter, Komla Adom, reports that broken glasses and blood splatters are sights near the Hotel, where the incumbent, Nii Lantey Vanderpuye and his family are said to be residing under strict security.

“We understand some two persons sustained gunshot wounds,” Komla Adom reports.

Later, our reporter says, the MP was arrested by the police and sent to the Accra Central Police Station.

“More than 10 others have been arrested too and have been put in a van to be whisked away.”

In Techiman South Constituency, one person is said to be in a critical condition after sustaining gunshot wounds.

In the Okaikoi North Constituency, some men have fired gunshots to disperse electoral materials at the collation centre.

Results trickle in

Results of the parliamentary elections have started trickling in.

In the Bole Bamboi Constituency, incumbent Sulemana Yussif has retained his seat.

In the Upper East Region, regional minister Tangoba Abayage has conceded defeat in Monday’s polls.

Counting riddled with chaos

The chaos had started much earlier into the counting of ballots.

At the Obrakyere Polling Station in the Awutu Senya West Constituency in the Central Region, an unidentified man is said to have been gunned down by police in an attempt to carry a ballot box.

This has, however, not been confirmed by the police.

At the La Nkwantanang Polling Station in the Madina Constituency, confusion erupted after party agents disagreed over a spoilt ballot.

Counting underway

Counting is underway in some polling stations across the country after collation of the ballots.

Results have started to trickle in, as a result.

EC cancels scheduled presser

The Electoral Commission, Ghana (EC) has called off a scheduled press conference as polls close across the country.

According to the EC, as reported by Media General‘s Evelyn Tengmaa, the presser will be held at a later time.

So far, polls have been described as smooth with isolated cases of hiccups.

NDC officially complains to EC over double-voting claims

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) says it has lodged an official complaint with the Electoral Commission, Ghana (EC) over reports that some persons who voted last Tuesday in the Special Voting exercise have been verified to vote again on Monday, December 7.

The party claims this is an affront to the EC after promising that the biometric verification devices (BVDs) procured for this year’s elections would work perfectly

This was told journalists by National Communications Officer Sammy Gyamfi at an emergency press conference.

Lordina & Samira also vote

Former First Lady Lordina Mahama was at the Next Page Polling Station at Tse Addo in the La Dadekotopon Constituency to vote in the elections that could see her husband return to power.

She was accompanied by her sons.

Second Lady Samira Bawumia was also at the Christ The King Parish Polling Station to cast her ballot.

NDC to hold ’emergency’ press conference

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) scheduled an emergency press conference at its headquarters at 2:30pm.

It is unclear what the largest opposition party will want to address.

Shooting at polling station where Hawa Koomson fired shots

Two persons are reported injured after unidentified gunmen fired shots near the Steps To Christ Polling Station in the Awutu Senya East Constituency of the Central Region.

It is the same polling station, where Minister for Special Development Initiatives Mavis Hawa Koomson fired shots in defence during the registration in June.

This time, the shots were fired when the NDC Candidate had just finished casting her ballot, our corespondent Rosina Forster reported.

Motorbikes were also burnt during that commotion in June.

Asantehene, Nana Konadu & Opoku-Agyemang cast their ballots

Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II and his wife, Lady Julia, have cast their ballot at the Manhyia Palace 1 Polling Station in the Manhyia South Constituency of the Ashanti Region.

Voting across the country appears smooth with some of the major players hailing the EC.

Presidential Candidate of the National Democratic Party (NDP) Nana Konadu Agyemang-Rawlings hailed the EC after she voted at the Ridge Church School Polling Station in the Klottey Korley Constituency.

NDC’s Vice Presidential Candidate Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang also described as “smooth and straightforward” the process of voting.

Akufo-Addo, Mahama et al vote

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has cast his ballot at the Rock of Ages Polling Station in Kyebi in the Abuakwa South Constituency.

He was accompanied by First Lady Rebecca Akufo-Addo.

President Akufo-Addo’s challenger John Dramani Mahama has also cast his ballot in Bole Bamboi Constituency.

Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia was also in Walewale in the North-East Region to vote.

“I encourage all qualified Ghanaians to come out and vote. This is a very important civic exercise, which we must discharge in a peaceful manner,” he said.

Upper East: Ballots being issued to voters without Akufo-Addo

There were reports in the Upper East Region that officials are issuing out ballots to voters without the portion of incumbent Akufo-Addo, making NDC’s candidate John Mahama No. 1 on the sheets.

It is unclear what reason is behind this. but our correspondent, Tanko Rabiu Mohammed, said the poling station in the Bawku Central Constituency.
