The government is urged to consider the national bamboo plantation policy as a mitigation measure to preserve the depleting forest cover in the country.
With the world celebrating International Bamboo Day on September 18, 2021, the International Organization for Bamboo and Rattan states that Ghana can reap the many environmental, social and economic benefits of bamboo.
At the opening ceremony of a bamboo plantation in Akyem Sagimas near Kyebi in the Eastern Region, the Organization's National Coordinator for Bamboo and Rattan, Michael Kwaku, said that China receives millions of foreign exchange from bamboo plantations. He said that the development of bamboo could lead Ghana to achieve most of the sustainable development goals.
He mentioned that Sustainable Development Goals 1, 7, 11, 12, 13 and 15 can best be achieved using bamboo plantations. He added that bamboo has the potential to extract toxins from contaminated soil and is also a resource for climate change mitigation.
He said it is considered a good species for carbon sequestration. At Okyenhene Palace, the Okyenhemaa, Nana Adutwumwaa Dokua, said the Okyenhene would be ready to facilitate the release of arable land for bamboo planting to help create jobs. She said bamboo production could be a major livelihood for most of the young people who have lost their jobs following the ban on illegal mining. She said the One - District - One Factory government policy could explore other businesses that will turn bamboo into door panels, plywood, tables and chairs, charcoal production and other poverty alleviation artifacts.
Nana Dokua added that bamboo is very common in Okyenman and wherever the river flows, but illegal mining activities have destroyed the bamboo plantation in Okyeman. Bamboo, she said, was used to preserve rivers during the dry season and to protect the river from pollution.
Okyenhene Environmental Foundation Executive Secretary Kofi Gyimah noted that their organization is collaborating with the International Bamboo and Rattan Organization to plant and nature bamboo along the banks of the Brim River in order to bring it about. protect and ensure that he takes his glory of purity.
World Bamboo Day is a day to raise awareness of bamboo globally. Where bamboo grows naturally, bamboo has been an everyday item, but its use has not always been sustainable due to its exploitation.
The World Bamboo Organization aims to bring the potential of bamboo to higher exposure to protect natural resources and the environment, ensure sustainable use, promote new bamboo crops for new industries in regions around the world, as well as promote traditional uses at the local level for the economic development of the community.
