My name is Selorm Ameza and I am a Creative person and Tourism advocate among other things and I have this inherent gift of curating ideas that can transform the Tourism and Creative Arts circle if given the opportunity. So I want to be put to the test.

I want to use this gifts I have to transform my hometown Akatsi into an ARTS TOWN as a way to promote Tourism as well as create opportunities for Creative people in Akatsi and Volta Region as a whole.

So I am writing a proposal to the MCE and MP of the Akatsi-South Municipality for them to set up a “TOURISM AND CREATIVE ARTS PROJECT DEPARTMENT” for me as an employee of the Akatsi Municipal Assembly so I can use this gift and ideas to transform Akatsi into an Arts town with 12 strategic ideas.

I don’t want to get paid, just give me an office with a letterhead and I would make the magic happen.

I am tired of only sharing ideas and life’s too short this days so I want be able to work this dreams into reality.

So I just need an office space with the full support and endorsement of the MCE and DCE to raise funds from wherever legal avenues I can to undertake this 12 ideas come January 2022!

So all the projects would be Public projects and not my Private project. That way the idea to transform Akatsi into an ARTS TOWN would outlive us all.

I have been able to carve a niche for myself within the Tourism and Creative Arts industry on social media and the Volta Region and I believe I can use that to raise all the funds needed to transform Akatsi into an “Arts Town”.

We’ve got a lot of Companies, Institutions, Private individuals, Foreign Embassies, NGOs and a lot more folks out there We can easily get on board for this dream to work if they know the institution I work for represents the voice of the People and not an individuals idea.

#1 ARTIST EMPOWERMENT PROJECT

In order to turn Akatsi into an Arts Town we have to empower our local Artisans with opportunities and support.

And for this reason I’ve identified and selected 10 Artisans including myself for the pilot project of an Artisans empowerment project.

The idea is to raise GH2,000 each for all 10 Artisans to buy materials they need. Then we create a co-working space for them for a month so that we can oversea them create the products! And then organize an Arts and Craft Bazaar for them after the one month to sell the products.

The 10 Artisans are;

We would use social media to push their brands as well as do Live Social media interactions doing the one month production period.

There’s a huge shed just opposite the MCEs office where we can turn into the makeshift creative co-working stalls for the 10 Artisans to work at for the month.

#2 BUILD A CAMP SITE AT THE CATERPILLARGA DAM FOR CAMPING AND GLAMPING

Camping is now becoming the new preferred way to travel for Tourists in Ghana and all it takes to create a camp site is to have a perfect location, create some platforms on top of which people can mount their tents, create a fireplace for bonfire with seats, have a toilet and bath space and make the place secured for Campers!

And just one plot land at the Caterpillarga with a raised platform would be perfect for this project. And it would cost less than GH 20,000cedis to make the place ready for standard camping. And we can make twice the amount invested in a year from Tours and Events.

The Campsite would have Board games like Oware and Ludo, as well as a Paintball arena for Campers, Tourist and Travelers to experience Paintball. And a Paintball arena can take less than half plot and we can create it with old tires and old drums!!!

We would then advertise the Campsite on social media, blogs, radio/TV and then organize trips and events for people to come and experience camping by the Dam. We won’t allow swimming since the water is not hygienic enough to swim.

#3 BUILD AN ART AND CRAFT MARKET AT THE RC SCHOOL PAVEMENT

Create an Arts market on the RC Pavement with at least 20 stalls for Artists to display their works!!!

It would be bamboo stalls shops divided into 7 different departments! Fine Art, Sculpture, Bead works/Accessories, Fashion, Photography, Contemporary Art and Batik-Tiedye!!!

Artists would put their works in each department for a fee!

It would be tiny lotto kiosk type of stalls for exhibition of products on the pavement with some nice seats and Graffiti on the walls of the school.

#4 TOWN PAINTING PROJECT WITH DELUXE PAINTS

We would write a proposal to Deluxe Paint to partner with them to undertake a project to paint Akatsi colourful.

We would get Deluxe Paints to give us a about 30% discount on the paints and come set up a sales point in Akatsi.

We would also form 4 groups or more of Painters with a group comprising of 5 Painters who would paint for half the normal price.

This is to make Akatsi look colourful by painting all the house by the roadside as well as every nook and cranny of Akatsi with nice colors.

And the launch of this event can see Azumah Nelson and Akrobetu come to Akatsi since they are already ambassadors for Deluxe Paint. We would do the launch at the RC Park.

#5 GRAFFITI AND MURALS IN TOWN

Graffiti and Murals would make Akatsi look like an Arts town, so we would write a proposal to Ghana Graffiti Association to help turn Akatsi into an Arts Town by commissioning awesome Graffiti and Mural works along the road as well as some major places.

The Graffiti society would be tasked to do some awesome Graffiti works at places like the Library, Agorsor building where Kalaewo fm is, the side view of the Ghana Commercial bank, the old Post office, District Assembly, District Hospital and other places.

They would also draw floor Art from the front of Shine Fm to St Paul’s Clinic as well as the Four Junction and Aho Crescent floor.

And they would also draw nice murals on the Metal bars along the road. We would fix plywood on the metal bars and commission educative Artworks on them.

#6 AKATSI TOURISM WEBSITE

I intend to create a website for Akatsi with the history, tourist sites, stories of the past, heroes, hotels in and around Akatsi, pubs and bars etc.

Write about Akatsi and Avenor history such as

*Datutagba war

*Kporviadzi protective rocks

*The Avenor Chief that made it rain

*Life Stories of successful citizens like Hon. Doe Adjaho, JK Horgle, Gershon Klutse, Dr. Agbemapo and Aheto, Dr Seyram Tettey among others!!!

*Festival and events in town updates

*Trending Akatsi news section etc etc.

#7 RECREATE THE RC SCHOOL PARK INTO AN OUTDOOR EVENT PARK

Akatsi is situated in the middle of Southern Volta and can become a major event hosting town if we can recreate the RC Park into an event centre where event organizers can rent and organize crowded events.

The RC Park is known for hosting large crowds and we can recreate the fence walls and fix the gate to have an enter and exit doors to lessen the crowd at gates.

We would also build a wooden divider to block the spaces between the classroom blocks so we can close it when having events.

The Park would then be rented out at a good fee for outdoor events!!!

#8 ORGANIZE ART RELATED EVENTS BOTH WEEKLY AND MONTHLY

*Monthly Art Bazaar at the RC Park with one major Artist in Ghana!

*Weekly Sunday Artisans Mega keep fit at the RC Park and normal Art market sales at the Art market we want to create at the RC school pavement.

Host a weekly SUNDAY KEEP FIT AND ARTS MARKET every Sunday morning led by Atsu Necku who is a Gym instructor.

And then host a monthly Arts, Crafts and Food event at the RC Park dubbed “AKATSI ARTS BAZAAR” every last weekend of every month.

#9 COMMISSION PUBLIC SCULPTURES IN TOWN

Riase funds to Commission beautiful Sculpture works at various places in Akatsi by the acclaimed Artists such as “Kwame Boafo” and “Efo Selassie” of OSRAMBO studios, “Kumi Samuel” from Kumasi and if possible “Serge Akwetei” among others. This guys have their works in internationally acclaimed Galleries and having their works in Akatsi would add weight to our projects!

The Sculptures would include;

*Statue of Jerry John Rawlings at the Aho Crescent.

*Student and Teacher statue on the pavement in front of No.1 Schools.

*An Artwork erected in the middle of the 4 Junction showing directions to Sogakope, Aflao, Ho and Dzodze!

*An Artwork of a market woman selling and would be situated in front of the new Akatsi market or even the “Gbedzrogbe market”!

*Contemporary Sculpture on the pavement in from of the RC school where we would have the Arts Market!

*Sculpture of a Nurse at the District Hospital.

#10 ARTISTIC SIGNPOSTS AND BUSSTOPS

We would raise funds to create Artistic signposts at some vantage points in Town.

The signposts would be one at the Torve by pass with AKATSI on it.

Then one at the Gbaflome side of the by pass with AKATSI on it as well and other major points.

Signpost at the Aho crescent showing road to Kpotame. One at the Blackcat junction as well as all the small towns in Akatsi like Tortorme, Agbaflome, Gagbakope, Bata, Zuta, Badzivorkope among others.

Also we would create a few bus stops at the main station, one around Tartorme, One at the Police station among others with Art all over them.

The Signposts can be created for us by local Artisans or even SELOART.

#11 FLOWERS FOR DECOR IN FRONT OF ALL STORES AND HOUSES BY THE ROAD

Due to the global warming and climate change effects, we would also turn Akatsi into a Garden by encouraging everyone to have a flower pot in front of their shops and houses.

We would source nice flower Pots from Vume near Sogakope and sell to all the stores and those who need it. We would also get variety of awesome flowers from the Parks and Gardens department and nurse them ourselves at the Caterpillarga flower place.

#12 HOTELS DISCOUNT TO INVITE MORE PEOPLE

We also intend to liaise with all the Hotels and Drinking pubs in Akatsi to organize trips for both Tourists and Travelers to come and experience Akatsi.

The Tourism and Creative Arts project would liaise with hotels like Viva Vergas, Viglin Lodge, Eli Hotel, Volta Paradise and all the Hotels we can get to help curate experiences for people to come and enjoy Akatsi at discount prices with unique experiences like candle light dinner, bonfire nights, Games, trips to tourist sites in and out of Akatsi among others.

And Akatsi got some nice places like Pubs where you can come sit and meet people and fine ladies like Padis/SM Lounge, Royal Gardens, Continental and a few nice places we get to hang out in town.

*ACRILEX GHANA; Would help us with art accessories for the painting and graffiti works among others.

*WINNERS COOPERATIVE CREDIT UNION: Would be our local financial service provider and partner as well. They would be our major credit facilitator and Bank.

*CHURCHES IN AKATSI: Akatsi has a lot of Churches who would sure be willing to support a project like Transforming Akatsi into an Arts Town to promote local Tourism.

*GERMAN EMBASSY: The Ewe people seem to have a deep connection with the German people and having them on board would be good. They have the money to invest and DW TV is also a great news outlet to share our projects

*FRENCH EMBASSY: The Volta Region was once under Togoland and therefore the French can also support our projects in Volta.

*MINISTRY OF TOURISM AND CREATIVE ARTS; The Ministry of Tourism has been looking out for projects to invest in and transforming Akatsi into an Arts town is something in line with their agendas.

*Also individuals in Akatsi such as;

MP HON. Bernard Ahiafor, JP Horgle aka Hugo , Mr Gershon Klutsey, Wise Horgle, Mr Solo, Lawyer Dzikunu and a lot more individuals would love to support if they see the magic start or even before it starts.

Akatsi Citizens in Accra and abroad and a few other people would also love to invest if the process can be trusted.

Also the office would embark on the following projects as well on the side if things go as planned;

Create and AKATSI ARTISANS ASSOCIATION for Creative people within Akatsi.

Run a Yearly AKATSI BRASS BAND FESTIVAL for the many Brass band groups and brass band culture growing up in Akatsi.

Do Periodic Art workshops in TieDye, Painting, Craft making and others to get the local people to appreciate Art the more!

I can’t achieve this with a personal NGO. The project can only have weight and outlive all of us if it is run as an official District Assembly business.
