I often receive letters from people seeking counsel for their relationships: Uncle Elbo Whit

I often receive letters from people seeking counsel for their relationships. With his permission, here is my response to one of such letters from a man who signed off as, Struggling Husband.

Dear Struggling Husband,

Your letter made me laugh, especially when you asked “What at all do women want from men?” I’m aware that no man asks this question to be enlightened, for many, it’s an outburst of confusion and frustration but I wish we’d ask it out of a genuine desire for answers.

And to help answer that question, I’ll employ a ‘lawyer’, Meghan Trainor through her song “Dear Future Husband”. In this song, Meghan captures the essence of what women want from men.

She said “Take me on a date, I deserve it, babe.” During courtship, men don’t seem to have any problem taking the women on dates but after marriage some men don’t see the need for it anymore. It is such a simple desire of a woman that women find it difficult to understand why men struggle with it. I have discovered that one of the biggest challenges of marriages in Ghana is boredom.

A man can stay home in his boxer shorts for the whole weekend lying in the sofa watching television but that will not do for a woman. She’s invested in clothes and shoes that are begging to be taken out. Remember with boredom comes frustrations and the frustrated will take it out on those closest to them. So if you find wifey picking issues that you don’t think are worth fighting over, it might be time for some outing.

Dear Struggling Husband, go and listen to the song and don’t fight it; let it serve you well. I hope you’re able to ease the tension and discomfort and misunderstandings in your relationship and create the right environment for your love to thrive because I know you love your wife dearly.
