NDC heads to Dampare to investigate "1 million illegal ballots" allegedly printed for 2020 elections |
The Democratic National Congress, NDC, appointed Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, asked to investigate the alleged illegal printing of excess presidential ballots in the 2020 general elections. The petition signed by NDC Secretary General Johnson Asiedu Nketiah says that the culprits after the investigation should also be prosecuted.
“I am writing to you on behalf of the Democratic National Congress to request your office to investigate and prosecute anyone responsible for illegally printing more than one million surplus presidential ballots for the Ashanti region at Innolink Printing Press, one of seven companies in security printing that they are guilty of having was commissioned by the electoral commission to print electoral materials for the 2020 presidential and parliamentary elections, ”reads a part of the petition.
The party said its request was caused by the fact that there was no recent investigation into the electoral errors and violence that marked the election and voter registration. “As you know, the 2020 presidential and parliamentary elections were marked by various acts of violence before, during and after the elections.
Indeed, for the first time in Ghana's electoral history, at least one person was killed while registering, eight other people died in incidents of gun violence involving security guards, and several others sustained various degrees of injuries.
“We contend that the police's failure to fight such heinous crimes with determination heralds clear threats to Ghana's democracy that should affect all well-meaning Ghanaians and development partners. For this reason, we ask the Ghana Police Service to inform us about the status of the investigation and prosecution. " The NDC has kept saying that there were too many votes in the 2020 general election. The Electoral Commission (EC) last week called on the Ghanaian Police Service to investigate claims made by former President John Mahama that there had been an outvote in the 2020 general election.
An EC vice-president responsible for corporate affairs, Dr. Eric Bossman Asare, denied the claim and called on the police to investigate immediately. “The former president said that the thumb of the EC printed a million ballots in favor of the President of the Republic [Nana Akufo-Addo]. That is not true ... This is not an issue to be ignored and we urge the Ghana Police to investigate.
This is a huge issue that undermines the credibility of the electoral process and should not be ignored. We ask you to provide evidence to support this claim, ”he said. He does so despite the party losing the Supreme Court nomination in order to question the legitimacy of the presidential results and eventual winner.
The NDC has already had several legal cases in which the outcome of some of the seats in parliament that have been declared for the PNP is questioned.
