The role of dance in African culture - EweGhana
The role of dance in African culture - EweGhana

As an African, dancing is as much a part of my life as eating, drinking and working, but it is also an important part of our worship, following the guidance of the Bible where it is frequently referred to, especially in the Old Testament.

Dance is a form of worship in recognition of the love and praise of God. It was believed that God accepted it as satisfactory worship along with other spiritual practices. We can see this in some passages of scripture:

Ecclesiastes 3: 4 alludes to "A chance to sob and a chance to laugh, a chance to cry and a chance to dance." Jeremiah 31:13 explains: “At this time your young ladies will dance and be happy, young and old alike.

I will turn her pain into dance. "Exodus 15: 20-21 relates:" At that moment the prophetess Miriam, Aaron's sister, took a tambourine and each of the ladies followed her with tambourines and dances.

"Also the psalms allude to the joy of dancing before God: Psalm 149: 3 says: "Let them call his name with a dance and sing him music with the tambourine and harp" and "David praised the Lord with a dance".

Dance in Africa expresses similar feelings, not only adoration, but also social communication: allows passionate relational feelings and even levels of transition, as people move from one stage of maturity to another. He also communicates virtues, values and even teachings on a social form that are used to help people who help more, Nexen and celebrate. There are general reasons why dance is so important. It is an experience that moves us beyond material on intangible matter, only one way we can express ourselves if the words are poor.

We can feel the joy of a newly discovered love, certainty in the middle of an anguish or incredible difficulty, the energy fire of our childhood and the serenity of our milder and gentle years. In Africa, we call cultural or social dance, movements that embody our cultural values and standards.

Each cultural dance has a story that reflects certain values or beliefs and, therefore, learns not only the different types of trains. The movements in a dance, taken together, tell a story that is a path for a culture to share another culture or say its way of life to another.

To ensure the precision of the movements that preserve the integrity of the culture, every clan in Nigeria has someone dedicated to shaping and transmitting the usual clan movements. Since there are unique moves in the culture of each clan, this "dance ace" ensures that everyone knows what the moves are and how they should be danced. These instructions are passed down from generation to generation and some have never been updated.

Music and dance are such an integral part of everyday life in Africa because music conveys feelings, expresses soul-changing experiences and even helps to unite networks of people who share common values and life experiences - all important values. Dance can create a sense of security and achievement, and can provide icebreaker opportunities to meet new people and make new friends.

African dances are usually participant and each country has many unique styles. Some are really incredible. Name some: Indlamu de South Africa, based on the culture of Zulu; Kpanologist from Ghana; Moribayassa de Guinea;

Ethiopia Ethiopia; and many others. Regardless of how these dances are specifically conventional, every person dancing the style and its unique culture in dance, which also reflects your country and its history. It is always exciting to observe the variety of African dance movements and styles.

In addition to being a fun and entertaining activity, dancing has many health benefits. Strengthens physical and psychological well-being by strengthening balance, posture and flexibility and supporting brain development and mood. But there is something very special about African dance.

Although dance generally uses a sequence of steps and movements to resonate with the speed and rhythm of a piece of music and to coordinate the body in a cadented manner, most African dances are separate body movements that are very difficult to organize intellectually. They are known as polyrhythmic and polycentric movements. Emily Willette erklärt mehr in "Africanist aesthetics in American dance forms"

The polirhiptm is the layer of different rhythms to another and polyininry is the idea that the movement can be initiated from any part of the body. These two qualities play together because different parts of the body dance to different instruments that play at different rhythms. [Robert] Farris Thompson describes the learning of polyhytm and polycentrism: "My hands and my feet should keep the time with the gongs with the gongs, my hips with the first drum, my back and shoulders with the second howl. All Elements of music is clearly displayed on the body, and nothing is omitted. This dance method is another way to integrate and appreciate the entire body and appreciate music and dancing.

This can also be expressed in that the artist's body is separated in a certain way so that different parts of the body move independently of each other. The drum is also an essential part of the accompaniment of African dance. It may very well be seen as the heartbeat of a particular clan expressing their collective state of mind and relating this collective energy to that of their ancestors. The drumming is often accompanied by clapping or stomping, and is complemented by singing voices as the dancers move in disciplined steps.

Unfortunately, as a unique aspect of African culture, dance was not highly valued by the missionaries who came to our countries. After the Second Vatican Council, most of the African countries began to use dance in our liturgies, but now the bishops in some of them do not allow this important part of our culture and worship.

We can only hope that these restrictions will end, since dancing is a biblical act that God accepts as true worship and love.
