His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II was awarded the ‘Pillar of Peace Award’ in 2019 to acknowledge the significant role he played in restoring peace to the Dagbon people in the Northern Region of Ghana after decades of protracted Chieftaincy crisis between members of one royal household.
The award also acknowledged Otumfuo’s role as a restraining influence that has manifested in almost every election cycle in Ghana. That influence, additionally, has ensured peaceful elections, culminating in seamless transitions in governments, especially when power changed hands between the two dominant political parties in Ghana.
In appreciating these track records, the E ON 3 Group, together with the Manhyia Palace, launched the Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Commemorative Gold Coins on the 12th December 2021as a fitting memorial in honour of His Majesty, the King of the Asante kingdom.
It is also in recognition of his tremendous contribution in expanding the frontiers, not only good governance, but also of the rich African traditional leadership acumen beyond Ghana and, for that matter, the African continent.
The Gold Coin will be 99.99 per cent (24 karats) fine gold with a diameter of 37.00 mm and weigh 31.104 grams.
Proceeds from the issuance of the Gold Coin will be channelled into the establishment of a cultural resource centre, to promote activities related to tradition, customary and conflict resolution in Ghana.
The Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, speaking at the ceremony to launch the Gold Coin acknowledged the origin of gold production and the depth the forebearers of Asanteman went to give up control of the mineral resources to the state.
He also recognised the environmental impact of gold production particularly illegal mining activities which has affected the country for years.“The calamitous impact on our environment, compounded by the scourge of galamsey that has afflicted our country for some years now, has thrust Ghana and the mining industry deep in the throes of the debates about the climate which is the greatest challenge facing humanity today,” he stated.
While recognising the honour he announced the Asanteman’s commitment to tackle the challenge of deforestation and ensure the re-afforestation of at least 50 per cent of our degraded forest lands within the next five years.
“We want to be able to do this in partnership with dedicated green investment vehicles to drive the momentum for Ghana’s transition to a carbon-neutral nation in accordance with our international commitments.”
He expressed optimism that the success of the Commemorative Gold Coin will convince the nation that there is room for more innovative ways to help us maximise the basis of our nation’s wealth.
The Asantehene said: “Asanteman will play its part in this exercise and will encourage other traditional leaders to harness the creative talents at their disposal to make it a worthy global effort.”
Otumfuo also entreated the political class to indulge each other in a manner that contribute to shape the development of the country. “If we are honest, we will agree there is no perfect government and there will never be as long as different points of view prevail,” he added.
He said taxes are a key means through which governments raise revenues to pursue development projects, and, therefore, entreated the public as good citizens to honor tax payment.“We elect people to represent us to make sure there is some equilibrium in what governments do. It is to our good that our representatives in Parliament subject the national budget to the most vigorous scrutiny and to call for changes,” he stated.
In view of this, he said governments must always have the humility to acknowledge and embrace useful inputs from all sources while asking “representatives to also to bear in mind that it is not their role to either determine policy for the executive or to frustrate them from performing their legitimate duties.”
